Plastic Waste
in the Ocean

Plastic has become a serious problem in the world's oceans and is threatening the fragile ecosystem. Millions of tons of plastic waste enter the oceans every year and sea turtles are one of the most affected species. It is therefore of great importance to raise awareness of this problem and take action to reduce the amount of plastic entering the oceans.

Briefing

The aim was to design an interactive application that provides information on a topic of our choice. We attached great importance to an appealing design and used interactions to inform users and arouse their curiosity. The project focused on interface design, visual design, information design, navigation design, data visualization, layout and typography.

Communication goal

Our mission is to raise awareness and promote a deep understanding of the impact of plastic on sea turtles. We want to encourage people to make more conscious choices and reduce their plastic consumption.

Information architecture

In our exhibit, we offer both an explorative and a linear narrative structure. Visitors have the opportunity to decide for themselves which content they want to explore. However, each piece of content follows a linear sequence to ensure a clear and structured flow of information.

Ideation & Wireframes

During the design process, we developed numerous ideas for the exhibition, using techniques such as the "Crazy Eight". We liked some ideas in particular, which made it difficult to choose the final exhibit. Our aim was to actively involve the visitors and grab their attention with an eye-catching exhibit.

We have created wireframes for the Great Pacific Garbage Patch that contain initial concepts of our future illustrations and information layouts. In addition, we developed different variations for our information path to ensure that we achieve the best possible visual outcome for our exhibit.

Result

In our exhibit, visitors have the opportunity to take part in an interactive component by placing plastic objects in a sculptural sea turtle. Informative content is then presented on a screen. Each individual object tells its own story about plastic and its impact on sea turtles. Information flyers are available for the objects, providing visitors with comprehensive information on the topic.

Our work began with intensive research on the topic of "Plastic in the sea and its impact on sea turtles". We placed great emphasis on design and creating opportunities for interaction in order to attract visitors' attention. We are convinced that our exhibit can change people's awareness and attitude towards plastic consumption.
